McGhie and Douglas win Friends of Scottish Rugby gongs
11 Jun 2026Friends of Scottish Rugby (FOSR) hosted their annual dinner last week at the Caledonian Club in London, with international stars taking home the two big prizes on the night.
Francesca McGhie received the Lady Jean Macpherson Trophy for Young Scotland Female Player of the Year, having wowed on the wing since her 2023 debut against England, scoring some 16 tries over the course of her 29 caps to date.
And flanker Freddy Douglas, who has just been named in the Scotland squad for this summer’s inaugural Nations Championship, was given the Sir Willie Purves Quaich for Young Scotland Male Player of the Year on the back of a full breakthrough season with Edinburgh Rugby.
Friends of Scottish Rugby has been in existence for almost 30 years, created to support the game at all levels. Based in London, FOSR have supplied everything from balls to mouthguards for young club players and donated over £600,000 to various rugby projects with Scottish connections.
Guests at the Caledonian Club last Thursday 4 June included such international stars as Bryan Redpath, Bruce Douglas and Chris Paterson, whilst Managing Directors at Edinburgh Rugby and Glasgow Warriors respectively, Doug Struth and Kenny Brown, were also part of the audience.
Dave MacKay, Chair of Friends of Scottish Rugby, said the evening was a memorable one: “The evening was yet another roaring success. We are so grateful for the terrific support, in particular from Scottish Rugby, but also from our faithful friends and colleagues.”
