In one of five such ceremonies across the country for all 16 participating countries, the Scotland players were welcomed along with the squads from Australia, Samoa and Wales.

Scotland captain Rachel Malcolm said: “Playing at a World Cup is truly something we have dreamt of our entire lives. And to be here and have an opportunity to be part of what is going to be the biggest event in women’s rugby so far… I’m so proud.” You can watch Rachel’s speech here.

The tournament kicks off at the Stadium of Light in Sunderland this Friday night with the hosts England playing USA. Scotland open their campaign the following day against their Six Nations rivals, Wales (Saturday 23 August, kick-off 2.45pm, live on BBC Sport).
