Scotland to face Canada, Wales and Fiji at Women’s Rugby World Cup 2025

The pools have been confirmed for the Women’s Rugby World Cup 2025, with Scotland set to face Canada, Wales and Fiji.

The draw was made live on the BBC One Show with Gabby Logan and Maggie Alphonsi with just 10 months to go before the tournament kicks off in England.

Giving her reaction live at the draw, Scotland captain, Rachel Malcolm said: “None of those pools are easy but looking at our pool we’re super excited.

“What’s evident straight away is that the four teams play different styles of rugby. Canada are definitely a force to be reckoned with, they’re probably going to be our biggest challenge but equally we know Fiji play a very quick brand of rugby so we have to be ready for that and we know the challenge that a very physical Wales team bring so we’re excited for it.”

Following the completion of the WXV tournament, the 16 competing teams were drafted into four bands based on their final world rankings (as of 14 October).

The top four teams were placed into band 1 and pre-populated into the first position in each pool. The remaining 12 teams were drawn into bands 2,3 and 4 based on their rankings and were drawn one by one. With Scotland in seventh seed, they were placed in band 2 with Australia, Ireland and Italy.

Band 1: England (1), Canada (2), New Zealand (3), France (4)
Band 2: Australia (5), Ireland (6), Scotland (7), Italy (8)
Band 3: USA (9), Wales (10), Japan (11), South Africa (12)
Band 4: Spain (13), Samoa (15), Fiji (17), Brazil (42)

About Scotland’s opposition

Canada
Prior to 2018, Scotland had only ever played the world-ranked number two side at Rugby World Cup competitions. Their first meeting came in 1994 where Scotland won 11-5.

Their last Test match against each other was played at Scotstoun Stadium, Glasgow, where Scotland narrowly lost out 25-28.

Wales
Scotland Women recorded their first consecutive victories over Wales since 2005 when they faced off at Hive Stadium in the Vodafone Series in September.

Scotland will once again face Wales in the Guinness Women’s Six Nations at Hive Stadium next year.

Fiji
Scotland played Fiji for the first time in their history earlier this year in the build up to the WXV competition. Scotland notched nine tries in an entertaining win at Hive Stadium, recording their largest home win of the 21st century, 59-10.
