Patterson first picked up a rugby ball at Jed-Forest RFC.
He played all of his youth rugby for the borders team before moving to Hawick RFC where he was part of the team that won the 2022/23 Premiership title.
In 2023, Hector was named as one of the fifteen FOSROC Scottish Rugby academy players aligned with Edinburgh Rugby. He also played for FOSROC Super Series side Watsonians during the 2023 Sprint.
