McHaffie ready for Hong Kong 7s

16 Apr 2026

Scotland U20’s and Great Britain 7’s speedster Rory McHaffie has had quite the season. From being selected for GB7’s in the lead up to their opening tournament in Dubai earlier this year to making his U20 debut for Scotland, the young Peebles player now had his sights set on the Hong Kong Sevens this weekend.

The young winger was part of Fergus Pringle’s Scotland U20 squad during the Six Nations this year, scoring on his debut in the win against Italy.

Ahead of the Sevens World Championship which kicks off tomorrow morning he said: “I’m excited to get out playing again. I had been part of the squad before the Six Nations so it’s been good to get back into the environment. They’re both very different competitions but in terms of the ideas that we have, we want to go out there, do well and push ourselves so it’s been similar in that sense.”

Rory has seen the benefit of being involved with the sevens and allowed him to transfer those skills into the 15s game.

“I’ve loved my time involved with GB7’s as it’s been perfect as a back three player to translate those skills into my 15s game. You get more touches, more one on one situations and your skills are under much more pressure. It really has been brilliant and allowed me to push myself.”

Ross Mccan has also been selected for the squad this weekend and the experienced winger has seen first hand the benefits of 7s to develop young players such as Rory.

He said: “The programme is built to offer these players more opportunities and these younger guys are getting the chance to play more throughout the season and try out some new things.

“Some of the group haven’t been to Hong Kong before, we’re all really excited to get to play with some of the new lads who we haven’t had the chance to play alongside yet.”
