A bumper crowd is expected for the deciding leg of world rugby’s oldest intercity derby, as both clubs celebrate the 150^th anniversary of the first-ever meeting between the two sides which took place at Burbank Park, Glasgow, on 23 November 1872.

Both sides will be playing in commemorative 1872 strip in a tribute to the history of the fixture with Edinburgh Rugby and Glasgow Warriors both set to launch their one-off kits in the build-up to December’s decider at BT Murrayfield.

Edinburgh Rugby have already kickstarted their 150^th anniversary celebrations with the launch of a project two years in the making; a comprehensive list and cap number of every player to have represented the club, dating back to those first 20 players that represented the capital city in 1872.

In time, Edinburgh will unveil its full list of internationalists and British & Irish Lions, before confirming the official head-to-head record against Glasgow Warriors – from match one on 23 November 1872 to last May’s emphatic victory over the Scotstoun club, which was played in front of 24,187 spectators at Scotland’s national stadium.

Edinburgh Rugby Head Coach Mike Blair has called on supporters from both sides of the M8 to make it a derby decider to remember at BT Murrayfield this December.

He said: “Last May’s 1872 Cup decider was a real spectacle and one made special by both Edinburgh and Glasgow fans that packed out BT Murrayfield to create a proper derby atmosphere.

“With both club’s celebrating their 150^th anniversary, and the anniversary of the first-ever meeting between the two sides in 1872, December’s derby will be a special night and one that all Scottish rugby fans can get behind, no matter which side you support.

“As a club, we’ve put a real emphasis in making sure we properly recognise the significance of our 150^th anniversary. December’s decider will a hugely important fixture and one that will allow us to showcase what rugby means to this city and our supporting regions.”

From Edinburgh’s Duhan van der Merwe and Hamish Watson, to Glasgow’s Ali Price and Zander Fagerson, the match-up will see Scotland’s biggest stars go head-to-head for much more than intercity bragging rights.

Tickets start at £5 for U16s, £20 for student/concessions and £25 for adults, while both a group ticket offer and club commission are available to supporters.
