Storm Boelo brought challenging conditions across the country this past weekend as teams battled it out in the Arnold Clark Men’s Premiership.
Our Scottish Rugby Match of the Week took us to Braidholm for a Glasgow derby between GHA RFC and Glasgow Hawks.
Despite Glasgow Hawks enjoying the majority of the early possession, GHA made their opportunities count. A superb 50:22 from stand-off Ben MacDougall set up the opening try for debutant Rory Baxter, with Jensen Gowdy adding the conversion. Gowdy then extended the hosts’ lead with a penalty shortly before half-time to give GHA a 10-0 advantage at the break.
Hawks responded strongly after the restart, reducing the deficit within three minutes as Craig Nolan finished off a powerful line-out maul. David McCartney added the conversion to bring the visitors within three points and give them renewed belief.
GHA responded well, using their dominant scrum and aggressive work at the breakdown to disrupt Hawks and regain control of the contest. As the windy conditions intensified, both sides turned to their benches in search of an advantage, but GHA continued to apply pressure in the Hawks half.
Their persistence eventually paid off. Following a high-tackle penalty, the home pack drove towards the line before GHA’s scrum-half spotted an opening and crossed for the decisive try. Gowdy’s conversion restored a 10-point cushion, leaving Hawks with a difficult task in the closing stages.
Hawks’ hopes of a late comeback suffered another setback when Aidan Orr was sent to the sin bin for a high tackle. GHA managed the remaining minutes effectively, relying on their strong set-piece and defensive organisation to see out a hard-fought 17-7 victory over their Glasgow rivals.
Due to the adverse weather conditions, the live broadcast of the Glasgow Derby was unable to go ahead.
At Goldenacre, Heriot’s Rugby Men produced an impressive performance against city rivals Edinburgh Accies, securing a 47-0 victory. Heriot’s showed exactly why they are one of the teams to watch this season, delivering a dominant display to keep Accies scoreless.
Down at Mansfield Park, Hawick RFC secured an important victory over Watsonian FC to move further clear of the bottom end of the table.
Conditions were equally as blustery in the Borders, but Hawick found their rhythm in the second half and took control of the contest before closing out the win in the final few minutes. Andrew Mitchell was instrumental in the hosts’ performance, scoring two tries on his 150th appearance for the men in green to mark the milestone in style.
Not far along the road at Poynder Park, Kelso RFC welcomed league leaders Melrose Rugby. The storm did little to dampen Kelso’s belief and the sides were level at 12-12 at half-time following a closely contested opening period. Melrose came out with greater intensity after the break, but mistakes at crucial moments allowed Kelso to seize the initiative.
The hosts capitalised on those opportunities to pull clear and secure an impressive 39-22 victory, handing the league leaders a significant setback.
At Millbrae, Ayr RFC hosted Currie Chieftains in a crucial clash between second and third place. The defending champions rose to the occasion, recording a 29-7 victory over the visitors.
Ayr brought intensity to both halves, crossing for five tries while restricting Currie to just one. The result was particularly significant for the champions, who had suffered their first league defeat earlier this season against Heriot’s Rugby Men before narrowly overcoming Glasgow Hawks last week.
The victory at Millbrae, combined with Melrose’s defeat at Poynder Park, saw Ayr return to the top of the Arnold Clark Men’s Premiership table heading into Round 9.
With the four play-off places in the Arnold Clark Men’s Premiership still up for grabs, the weekend’s results proved crucial at both ends of the table. Ayr reclaimed top spot, Kelso claimed an impressive win over the league leaders and Hawick boosted their hopes of moving away from the foot of the standings.
