Watsonian FC moved to the top of the Arnold Clark Women’s Premiership after beating Hillhead Jordanhill RFC 46-12 in the Scottish Rugby Match of the Week.
The result came in an important top-of-the-table meeting, with Hillhead Jordanhill looking to make it six wins in a row and maintain their unbeaten start to the competition. However, it was the Edinburgh side who came away with the points after a strong performance, scoring eight tries to secure a convincing win.
Hillhead Jordanhill captain Siobhann McGinley led her side in the opening exchanges, but Watsonians took the lead through Dawn Lawrie. It was the start of a difficult first half for the home side, as the visitors made good use of their possession and began to take control of the game.
Watsonians’ forward pack played a big part in their performance, giving their backs a good platform to attack. Captain Rachel Law also helped keep things organised as the visitors continued to find space and opportunities.
Hannah McMahon scored twice in the first half, while Lawrie added her second try. Sophie Anderson and Cieron Bell also crossed the line as Watsonians ran in six tries before the break. Hillhead Jordanhill did manage to respond through Hazel Mulligan, but the visitors went into half-time with a comfortable 36-7 lead.
The home side had a spell of pressure, but Watsonians continued to look dangerous whenever they got the ball. Their combination of strong forward play and quick attacking rugby made it difficult for Hillhead Jordanhill to get back into the contest.
After the break, Watsonians added two more tries. Julie Lyons crossed before replacement Carly Hall also got over the line, taking the score to 46-5 by the hour mark.
Hillhead Jordanhill continued to work hard and were rewarded late in the game when Lara Bardelli scored their second try. It was a welcome moment for Bardelli, who was making her first appearance since returning from injury. The try followed a patient spell of attacking play from the home side. There was no further change to the score, with Watsonians taking a 46-12 win back to Edinburgh.
Elsewhere in the Arnold Clark Women’s Premiership, Stirling County made their league title intentions clear with a 19-70 win over Biggar RFC.
Cartha Queen’s Park were unsuccessful in finding their first win and fell short 19-46 to Corstorphine RFC.
Garioch RFC Hosted Heriot’s Rugby Women with the visitors upsetting the hosts, winning 46-21.
The Arnold Clark Men’s Premiership reached its halfway point this weekend, with several important results shaping the league table ahead of the second half of the season.
The standout fixture saw league leaders Ayr RFC travel to face second-placed Melrose Rugby in a crucial top-of-the-table encounter. Ayr proved too strong for the Borders side, producing a powerful and clinical performance to secure a convincing 31-0 victory. The visitors crossed for six tries, securing a bonus-point win and strengthening their position at the top of the table.
Currie Chieftains bounced back from their defeat to Ayr last week in style, putting on a show for their home supporters with a 13-try performance against GHA RFC. Controlling the game from the outset, Currie made it a difficult afternoon for their visitors from the west of Scotland.
Kelso RFC travelled to Myreside full of confidence after defeating Borders rivals Melrose the previous week and knocking them off the top spot. However, they faced a determined Watsonians side in what proved to be one of the weekend’s most closely contested encounters.
Neither team managed to establish more than a one-try advantage throughout the match, with both sides sharing six tries in an entertaining first half.
With the score at 29-22 in Kelso’s favour in the closing moments, the visitors looked set to take the victory. However, Watsonians had other ideas. In the dying seconds, the hosts moved the ball wide, allowing Adrian Kotze to cross the whitewash and score under the posts. The successful conversion brought the teams level at 29-29, securing the first draw of the season.
Hawick RFC produced an important performance in their bid to move further away from the lower end of the table as they travelled to Raeburn Place to face Edinburgh Accies.
In a closely contested encounter, Accies struggled to capitalise on key moments, allowing Hawick to take control and secure a valuable 24-17 away victory. The result could prove crucial as the season approaches its business end, although Edinburgh Accies did manage to pick up a losing bonus point.
Over on the west coast, Heriot’s Rugby Men travelled to Balgray to take on Glasgow Hawks. After a somewhat sluggish start, the visitors found their rhythm and took control of the contest.
The match proved to be a game of two halves, with Glasgow Hawks dominating the opening period before Heriot’s came into their own after the break. Stand-off Isaac Coates played a key role in the turnaround, producing an impressive performance to help his side secure a 35-8 victory.
As the Arnold Clark Men’s Premiership reaches its halfway point, the individual statistics highlight some of the standout performers so far this season. Melrose’s Luke Townsend and Watsonians’ Bruce Weatherhead currently lead the points-kicking standings, with 66 points each. Heriot’s Isaac Coates is close behind on 59 points. Heriot’s and Ayr are also leading the way in the try-scoring statistics, with 55 and 53 tries respectively.
With the play-offs looming, there is still plenty to play for as the competition enters its second half. Ayr remain firmly in control at the top of the table, while Heriot’s and Melrose are keeping the pressure on.
At the other end of the standings, Glasgow Hawks will be looking to turn their fortunes around as they sit at the bottom of the table on three points.
