Scottish-qualified Lisa Cockburn was born in 1992 is known for her versatility in the front-row - playing both tighthead and loosehead - for Scotland.

Having competed in Taekwon-do and horse riding while growing up on a dairy farm near Basingstoke, it was Lisa’s friend’s promptings at school around the age of 14 that piqued her interest. Her rugby journey began at Basingstoke RFC, where she instantly fell in love with the sport during her first session. Encouraged by an enthusiastic and supportive coach, she quickly realised rugby was her passion.

In her later teens, Lisa sought opportunities to train and play, joining clubs in the surrounding areas such as Ellingham and Ringwood, Havant, and Solent Sirens.

While studying for her undergraduate degree in Sports and Exercise Therapy at Leeds Metropolitan University (now Leeds Beckett), Lisa was introduced to strength and conditioning, a turning point that significantly enhanced her rugby performance. During this period, she played as a second-row and No. 8 for the university team and joined DMP Sharks, one of England’s top-tier clubs.

Lisa went on to complete a master’s degree in Strength and Conditioning at Northumbria University and spent an impressive eight seasons with DMP Sharks, forming close bonds with teammates who became like family. In late 2021, she transitioned to Worcester Warriors and later joined Leicester Tigers. At the start of the 2024/25 season, Lisa signed for Gloucester-Hatpury.

Her Scottish heritage runs deep, with both parents and three of her grandparents hailing from Scotland, and this connection has paved the way for her to represent Scotland on the international stage.

Lisa made her debut for the Scotland Women’s team in the Autumn Internationals against Italy in November 2018, held in Calvisano.

In early 2022, Cockburn played her part as, after a long qualification process, Scotland defeated Colombia in Dubai to get the nation to a World Cup for the first time since 2010.
Lisa’s rugby career faced a significant challenge when she suffered a ruptured ACL during the 2022 Six Nations, sidelining her for 18 months, forcing her to miss out on the chance to be selected for the Rugby World Cup.
Ever determined, Lisa made her comeback in 2023 and was involved with Scotland during their WXV2 winning campaign in South Africa, and returned with the squad in 2024.
