Glasgow brings a great blend of youth and experience, with players eager to make their mark. Our focus will remain on ourselves, ensuring we make the right decisions in the right areas of the field. Key priorities will be maintaining possession, avoiding unnecessary turnovers, and capitalizing on our scoring opportunities. 

We continue our rotation with James Malcolm and Rory Jackson swapping places with Alex McGuire and Oscar Baird. Blair Macpherson and David McCartney replace the injured Ryan Sweeney and Richie Simpson, who is on Glasgow A duty. Marcus Kershaw starts at fullback, moving Luca Bardelli to the wing, which allows Jamie Shedden to step in at center for the injured Andy Stirrat. Jamie Drummond returns, giving Jake Shearer a rest this week. Seth Rae, Chris Elliot, and Mason Cullen join the bench.”

Pete Horne Glasgow A Coach: “Heading up to Millbrae is an excellent opportunity for some of our younger players to test themselves against the most physical team in the league. It’s been an excellent weeks training and I’m really excited to see how we stand up to the physicality and impose our game. Ayr are flying this season and sit top of the league so I’m sure the home support will be out in force helping to make it a brilliant occasion for the players on Friday night.”

Watsonians Head Coach Fraser Brown: “Friday nights game against Edinburgh A provides us with an excellent opportunity to gauge where we are against a fully professional side. 

We know we will be tested up front by a formidable pack, many of whom are experienced campaigners and who have had plenty of minutes in the URC and Europe this season. For our young players it will be an excellent marker for them, and an opportunity to show that they are ready to put their hand up for positions in next year’s new pathway system.”

Edinburgh A Coach Kris Burney:
“It has obviously been a successful Sprint campaign for us so far and we’re keen for that to continue. Last time out was a great challenge against a strong Heriot’s side, I imagine it would have been a thrilling watch for any neutrals, but it was certainly a nervy conclusion for us. However, our ability to hold on and secure that win shows the really promising resilience we have within this young group. 

Naturally we would love to sign off our Sprint season in style but we’re under no illusions that Watsonians pose a real threat. It appears they have slightly adjusted their style of play and that can take some getting used to. However, they have a core of strong players and look to be growing into the campaign as each game passes so I expect a challenging match. 

Once again, given the time of the season, we are fortunate to be able to maintain some selection consistency. The front five is unchanged from our visit to Goldenacre. Tom Currie moves to 8 and Freddy Douglas comes in to start at 7 following his huge impact off the bench against Heriot’s where he was arguably man of the match despite only playing 50 minutes. Adam McBurney plays out of position at 6 but his experience will be invaluable in another youthful side. 

The backline again only has a couple of minor changes. Following strong performances in the A team, Cammy Scott has been placed permanently in the first team training squad. Therefore Fin Burgess moves to stand off with Charlie Shiel returning to the side at 9. The rest of the backline remains unchanged for successive fixtures and we once again look forward to seeing those youthful combinations develop and flourish. 

 On the bench Harri Morris, Mikey Jones and Ollie Blyth-Lafferty cover the front row. It will be good to see Ollie in Edinburgh colours fresh off the back of winning the Scottish Premiership with Currie. Mark Fyffe from Edinburgh University returns for a third successive appearance which is really exciting for our developing partnership with the institution. Jerry Blyth-Lafferty joins younger brother Ollie on the bench, with Hector Patterson once again looking to provide energy when he enters the foray. Finally the inclusion of Callum Beckett from Currie and Joe Townshend from Strathallan School, both playing for Edinburgh for the first time, once again allows us to take a closer look at some young and promising talent that we otherwise wouldn’t get time with. 

On the whole, we’re very excited for our final run out as a squad in this campaign. We’re hoping to continue the great form that we bring into this match and know that it will be another exciting spectacle for all those that make their way to Meggetland on Friday night.”

Ben Cairns Heriot’s Rugby: “We freshen up thew squad with a few change as we enter the home staright of the Sprint. Dan King returns at fullback after recovering from shoulder surgery & Lewis Wells gets the nod on the wing ahead of Sam Pecqueur in an otherwise unchanged backline. 

“In the forwards, Josh Scott & Ruairidh Leishman return at LH Prop and No. 8 respectively. Duncan Hood comes in at Hooker and Pat Spence gets his first start in the 2nd row. Finally, Wallace Nelson comes in for the unavailable Sam Wallace. 

“Fergus Wood, Euan McAra and Cal Anderson return to the squad on the bench. 

“Although we got the 5 pointer last week, we were disappointed by our level of performance. We are expecting a big change in that regard this week. We know the Knights will capitalize on any loose play with some really good rugby players when the game breaks up therefore execution will be key for us this week.”

Scott Wight Southern Knights: “The team are aware that the last couple of weeks have been below our standards, so we’ve had a real focus on a couple of key elements of our game we want to change up for this weekend.

“It’s key that we get the basics right as we’re well aware that Heriots are very dangerous right across the pitch.”

Graham Sheil Boroughmuir Bears: “Jack Fisher will become the second Bear to make 50 appearances in the Super Series competition, a milestone only a few players in the country have achieved. Jack stepped up from Preston Lodge RFC to challenge himself at Super Series and has made some significant strides in his rugby development. Jack assumes the role of Vice Captain and he will be joined in the second row by Max Laboda. 

“There were some improvements in our performance last week, but overall it was a disappointing result for the Bears. On reflection, missed opportunities in the first half meant that we did not capitilise on the territory and possession advantage that we had. On the flip side Heriots were very clinical and they took their chances when they had them. Frustrating, for sure, but that is the reality of not taking the opportunities afforded us against strong opposition and were were penalized heavily for errors we made. Again, no easy solutions to these problems, back to training focusing on how we can become more accurate in our execution of both our skills and our game plan to confront the 2023 Champions Stirling Wolves.  

We know that Wolves are a very strong outfit with experience and quality across the squad which make this another big challenge for the Bears. With only a very limited time available now as a group, finding ways to fulfil our potential continues to be our priority, allowing us to compete and stive for the wins that the group crave. Improvement in our basic skills under pressure are key to improving our ability to build momentum and apply pressure on Stirling Wolves and find a performance that the group are content with.”
