Biggar pulled together an impressive 11 wins from 12 matches in the regional leagues last season, before topping the promotion table in the post-season to secure their ascendancy and Stewartry’s relegation.
Now they are tasked with pulling off a huge upset on matchday one against the reigning premiers, Cougars. The Edinburgh side stunned the competition last season, winning all 14 league matches, and overcoming a stellar Stirling County in the grand final at Union Park, 22-20 in the final minutes.
Both sides have seen changes on and off the field in the pre-season, so tomorrow afternoon’s match will be an early test for who can handle the heat.
Three things to watch out for this weekend:
- Heriot’s host Cartha Queens Park at Goldenacre. Heriot’s won twice against Cartha in the previous season, but the first of those matches was a 45-41 thriller.
- Watsonian FC, who take on Stirling County this weekend, haven’t lost in the opening weekend since 2017/18.
- 2024 and 2025 Sarah Beaney Cup runners-up Hillhead Jordanhill head to Garioch in their season opener.
This weekend’s matches:
Saturday, 16 August, all 2pm kick-offs:
- Biggar RFC v Corstorphine RFC
- Garioch RFC v Hillhead Jordanhill RFC
- Heriot’s Rugby Women v Cartha Queens Park RFC
- Watsonian FC v Stirling County RFC
