Scottish Rugby is proud to launch a comprehensive suite of health and wellness resources designed specifically for women and girls, coinciding with Scotland’s campaign in the Women’s Rugby World Cup 2025.

This timely initiative aims to empower more women and girls to stay active in the sport for longer by addressing some of the key health challenges that can impact participation.

The release includes six focused information packs, each tackling common physical and wellbeing barriers that players may encounter throughout their rugby journey in Scotland.

These include:

  • Breast health
  • Menopause
  • Menstrual health
  • Pelvic floor health
  • Postpartum return to play
  • Puberty

Each resource breaks down the health issues that can arise for women and girls, along with any associated symptoms, tips for looking after yourself, as well as significant milestones a player might encounter on their road to recovering from a health issue.

There is also best practice advice for coaches, referees, physios and club volunteers for supporting athletes, allowing for a holistic approach to certain health issues.

Scottish Rugby’s welfare manager Dr Karen Barclay said the resources were a key step in allowing women and girls greater control over a variety of key topics relating to their health in rugby clubs around the country.

“I am absolutely delighted to have worked with colleagues across Scottish Rugby to get these resources out there for our female athletes. Knowledge around what is normal for women and girls to experience while playing rugby as well as how to improve any female specific challenges when they occur is vital. I’d encourage everyone working with female athletes to take a look.”

“I’m really grateful for the great work done by the RFU in the first instance, for their Female Athlete Health and Welfare toolkit which was funded by RWC 2025 Impact Programme, and for their assistance in the development of our content.”

By providing accessible, relevant, and evidence-based guidance, Scottish Rugby is reaffirming its commitment to creating a more inclusive, supportive, and sustainable future for women and girls in the game.

Scotland Women head of medical services Florence Laing has been a key figure in creating these new resources, and has been championing a range of these topics and more within the national team.

She said: “These resources are about giving every woman and girl in rugby the knowledge, confidence and support they need to thrive at every stage of their journey.

“It is so important that female athletes understand aspects of their health which are unique to them. Within the national team, we address women’s health challenges openly, which contributes to creating an environment where players can perform at their best and enjoy the game for longer.”

The information is easily digestible and downloadable for individuals and clubs alike. The resources are available on the Scottish Rugby website now, from the Player Welfare page.
