Ken Macaulay Cup set for its inaugural staging

1 Apr 2026

The Co-Optimists are delighted to announce that this year, their annual fixture against East Lothian will take place, with the winners to lift the Ken Macaulay Cup. The fixture has been played annually since 1924 but from this year, teams will play for a very special trophy.

The Ken Macaulay Cup was created and crafted in honour of former Scotland second-row forward Ken, who was awarded a retrospective cap in February 2024 for a game against a French Select XV in 1980.

On the back of that, he decided to give back to the sport that he loved and undertook an incredible 1000-mile cycling challenge, during which Ken visited all 76 clubs across Scotland that he had played against or visited throughout his career, in the name of raising funds for four charities: the Murrayfield Injured Players’ Foundation, Prostate Scotland; Chest Heart and Stroke Scotland; and The My Name’5 Doddie Foundation.

Ken very sadly passed away shortly after completing his challenge, in October 2024.

His long and varied rugby career also involved playing and captaining the annual Co-Optimists-East Lothian fixture on a number of occasions, playing for both sides and eventually organising the fixture in his capacity as Hon. Secretary.

The inaugural Ken Macaulay Cup will be staged at North Berwick’s Recreation Park on Wednesday 15 April, kick-off 6:30pm, to which all are invited. A collection for Chest, Heart and Stroke Scotland, one of the charities that Ken fundraised for, will be in operation.
