New look Saltire Energy Caledonia Cup sees Sevens format for girls matches

14 Mar 2025

The Saltire Energy Caledonia Cup, the largest regional rugby finals day in Scotland, will this year see a new format trialed for girls’ matches – they will be contested in the Sevens format, as opposed to the traditional 15-a-side.

The final day bonanza will return to Robert Gordon’s College Countesswells Sports Fields, on Sunday 30 March, after the success of the 2024 event.

About 600 players from across the north of Scotland will contest 16 finals, supported by 70 coaches, 18 match officials, 35 Development Officers and teams of medical professionals on hand to ensure the safety and wellbeing of players.

The day sees 24 boys’ and eight girls’ teams contesting the finals day event. The first matches will kick off at 10:30am.

Ahead of the event, Vicky Cox, Head of Competitions & Compliance at Scottish Rugby, said:

“After the success of the 2024 event held at Countesswells, Scottish Rugby is excited to return for an expanded competition for this year’s Saltire Energy Caledonia Cup.

“I’m particularly eager to see how the new Sevens format for the girls’ matches goes, as it will make the games faster and even more entertaining. With about 170 girls competing this year, I can’t wait to see how they will go,” she said.

Chief Operating Officer of Robert Gordon’s College, Kenny Gunnyeon commented:

“We’re delighted to welcome Scottish Rugby back to Countesswells for this year’s Caledonia Youth Cup finals day.

“Hosting such events allows us to further enhance the sporting landscape in the northeast of Scotland and increase engagement with the sport across the College and the wider community. Events like these really are a highlight of our annual calendar.”

The competition continues to be sponsored and supported by Saltire Energy, a leading rental specialist in oil and gas equipment to the global energy sector, whose headquarters are based in the north-east city.

Saltire Energy CEO, Mike Loggie, said the Caledonia Cup celebrates the values which the company has built itself on.

“As part of Saltire Energy’s partnership with Scottish Rugby, we are delighted to once again support the Saltire Energy Caledonia Cup. The competition celebrates an inclusive environment for Caledonian clubs and communities and has seen record numbers of teams entering year after year.

“The event signifies the positive impact sport has and celebrates the key values that are fundamental to what we stand for at Saltire Energy; respect, leadership, achievement, engagement and enjoyment.

“I wish all involved the very best of luck, the day will no doubt hold many successes but most importantly it will be a fun, exciting and enjoyable event for all involved.”
