Saltire Energy Caledonia Cup: Stirling take home four trophies

Robert Gordon’s College could not complete a sensational win on their own grounds as Howe of Fife/Bell Baxter punished the home side 53-10 in the Boys Under-18 Caledonia Cup on Sunday.

The Girls Under-18 Cup was decided after Stirling County RFC grabbed their game against Garioch RFC by the scruff of the neck, taking the match by 16 points in a 40-24 scoreline.

Thousands of spectators turned out to enjoy the Saltire Energy Caledonia Cup youth finals at Countesswells Fields in Aberdeen. The day saw nearly 400 young players take to the field, representing 22 teams in 11 enthralling finals.

The finals day was the culmination of rounds of regional leagues, cups, shields and bowls and is the largest regional rugby finals day in the country. The Calcutta Cup and Doddie Weir Cup were also on display at the grounds for spectators and players to take photos with.

Other matches on the day saw Stirling County competing in five finals and winning four of them by an overall margin of 43 points.

Deeside/Garioch competed in three finals, winning once – 55-21 in the Boys U18 Shield. Mackie RFC and Howe of Fife/Bell Baxter competed in two finals each, with both sides winning one title respectively.

The Boys U18 plate match was won by Aberdeen Wanderers over Gordonstoun 39-36, and was played on the previous weekend.

The Boys U15/16 plate match between Orkney and Strathmore, as well as the Girls U18 Shield match between Falkirk and Caithness were postponed and will be rescheduled to a later date.
