Scotland enter this phase of the season having built momentum over the recent international windows. During the 2025 autumn tests Scotland cruised past USA and Tonga, but fell just short to the All Blacks and suffered a disappointing defeat to Argentina. A highly competitive Guinness Men’s Six Nations campaign followed, featuring notable victories over both England and France which resulted in a third-place finish for the first time since 2018.
The beginning of the inaugural 2026 Nations Championship saw Scotland continue on a fine level of form. Travelling to Córdoba, the Scots avenged the loss to Argentina in an emphatic manner, scoring seven tries against Los Pumas. The win held significant weight not only in the tournament’s standings but in the Rugby World Rankings, elevating Scotland from seventh to fifth, leapfrogging both Argentina and England. They enter this game in South Africa looking to consolidate such a ranking.

The Springboks host Scotland on the back of eight straight victories which have characterised their status at the top of the global standings. These wins have included triumphs against the All Blacks, Ireland and France, ranked second, third and fourth respectively. Under the guidance of Rassie Erasmus, South Africa opened their Nations Championship account with a comprehensive 45-21 victory over England last weekend.
Despite implementing ten changes to their starting lineup for this Saturday’s fixture, the hosts retain core international experience and a powerful forward unit designed to control the open game as well as set-piece exchanges on home soil.

The most recent encounter between the two nations took place during the November Test window in 2024 at Scottish Gas Murrayfield. On that occasion, Scotland stayed in the fight throughout but ultimately couldn’t land anything like a knock-out blow against world champions South Africa, resulting in a 15-32 victory for the visitors.
Historically, matches between Scotland and the Springboks have demanded the highest level of physicality, with a mental fortitude to match and Saturday’s fixture will be no different. Loftus Versfeld is a notoriously difficult place to go, but Scotland will be putting it all on the line in this new tournament format in which every game counts.
