Scottish Rugby begins CashBack Schools of Rugby Phase 6 with £1.5M of investment

5 Sep 2023

The Scottish Government’s CashBack for Communities initiative will see more than £1.5M invested into state schools across Scotland in the latest Phase of the Schools of Rugby programme.

Phase 6 of the programme is focused on the theme of ‘Sport for Change’ and sees investment being delivered to schools in areas of deprivation, targeting pupils who may be at risk of being excluded, or at risk of exclusion from school, or at risk of being involved in antisocial behaviour.

Of the 13 schools involved in the programme, Irvine Academy and Northfield Academy are the latest to join.

The programme will form eight new CashBack Schools of Rugby at host secondary schools and feeder primary schools, providing leadership opportunities to help disadvantaged young people develop confidence whilst developing physical fitness, cognitive skills, physical competencies and personal qualities.

The project will also bring participation in positive activities and help young people contribute positively to their communities.

It is expected that the next phase of the programme will support more than 5,000 pupils.

Scottish Rugby’s Director of Rugby Development, Gav Scott said: “We welcome once again this significant investment from the Scottish Government, which will enable us to continue to open doors for young people, boys and girls, from all walks of life, not just to enjoy our sport but to become active physically, with communities and society as a whole.”

Hollie Howland of Falkirk High School is one of many young people who has thrived as a result of Scottish Rugby’s initiatives funded by CashBack, having recently been selected to represent Scotland Women U18 and is a current member of Scottish Rugby’s Youth Panel.

Hollie, who played for her local club, the Kelpies, before moving onto Stirling County this season, said: “The CashBack programme has played a pivotal role in my development not only as a rugby player but as a young person. From the minute I started this programme I felt such a strong sense of community, belonging and purpose which fuelled my passion for playing rugby and has been the catalyst for my achievements within the sport.

“I would encourage anyone who wants to get involved in rugby, to give it a go! I guarantee you won’t regret, the benefits are far reaching and opens up so many new opportunities.”

  • Dundee City – Craigie High School, Braeview Academy
