Tim’s Great Rugger Run for Doddie enters final week

27 Sep 2022

Tim Tunnicliff has entered the final week of his Great Rugger Run, which sees him run over 500 miles in 25 days on a route encompassing 104 rugby clubs across Scotland.

AGM 2025

The route has taken Tim across the West Highlands, Glasgow, Ayrshire, Stirling, Dundee, and over the course of the next week he’ll cross Fife, Edinburgh and the Borders, finishing his journey on Saturday 1 October in Melrose, just in time for Melrose v Aberdeen Grammar in Tennent’s National Division 1.

Tim’s motivation to create the Great Rugger Run challenge was inspired by adventurer and runner Anna McNuff who completed a challenge running to the different Girl Guiding groups in the UK.

Last year the Amateur Rugby Podcast host completed his first Great Rugger Run across the south of England, and asked his followers on Twitter to select his destination for the 2022 iteration, which saw an “tremendous number of people suggest Scotland”.

Tim has chosen to use the challenge to raise funds for the My Name’5 Doddie Foundation with a target of £10,000.

“The clubs in Scotland have been overwhelmingly positive”, said Tim.

“First off, they all love Doddie and love the charity and really want to help. People are also really intrigued about what idiocy I’m up to with what I’m putting myself through, so people find it quite interesting.

“I’ve been welcomed very warmly by the clubs in Scotland. Every experience has been different, and it varies especially with the timings and days I turn up. There are days when I have arrived on a Monday morning, but there have still been people from that club there to welcome me and wish me well.

“On the days I have arrived when there is training or a game, the atmosphere has been incredible and turning up to people cheering me on and welcoming me has been really special.

“It’s hard to pick out one or two highlights so far, as I say, everyone has been lovely. Cumbernauld in particular were so hospitable, Ayr was another lovely club to visit and Strathaven’s Director of Rugby, Grant Neilson, was fantastic and sorted out support for me at a day’s notice.

“I’m looking forward to my final week getting round the clubs in Fife and Edinburgh before heading to the Borders. If everything goes to plan, I should arrive at the Greenyards in time for kick-off!”
