He took a break from rugby to focus on other sports like tennis, before rekindling his love for rugby in high school.

Having made his Scotland U20 debut as part of the squad that won the 2024 World Rugby U20 Trophy, Cockburn missed the 2025 U20 Six Nations through injury, but recovered to be selected for the 2025 World Rugby U20 Championship squad.
